Fitbit Aria vs Withings WS-50 Review

Scales have recently evolved from an average boring typical bathroom scale to become smart devices you can use to accurately track your precise body fat and weight.  When it comes to smart scales the Withings WS-50 and Fitbit Aria Smart Scale are both excellent choices.  This review will help you decide which of these body mass scales is right for you.

Withings WS-50 Smart Body Analyzer

First up in this comparison is the WS-50.  With a retail price around $150, this body analyzer offers some very cool features.  This device goes far beyond that of a traditional scale in the fact that you can sync it through Wi Fi and Bluetooth connections, visualize your improvements and weight trends through your Android or iOS device, and even find your heart rate.

Features:

  • BMI and weight tracking
  • Heart rate tracking
  • Pocket Coach to help you achieve your goals
  • Air quality tracking to help you analyze your environment
  • Add up to 8 user profiles
  • Profile sharing available to share with your doctor and social media
  • Heath Mate App tracks your progress and trends

This body analyzer is not for the casual bathroom scale user.  This device is for those serious about tracking their health and well-being.  Whether you have orders from your doctor to monitor your weight or you are a fitness guru looking to keep track of your fitness goals, this device is for you.

This scale is calibrated to deliver the most precise body fat and weight measurement.  The sensors on the base will track your heart rate as well and allow you to automatically keep track of these measurements.

Fitbit Aria Wi-Fi Smart Scale

This device is very similar to the WS-50 body analyzer.  Retailing for around $130 this smart scale comes in white or black as well and allows you to track and upload your stats to Fitbit.com through a Wi Fi connection.  Like the WS-50 you can also track up to 8 users making this a great investment.

Features:

Track your body mass index (BMI) online

View graphs of your progress online

Automatic detection of each user

Password protection for each user account

Set weight goals and track them online

Pair with any Fitbit tracker

The main difference between these two devices is compatibility.  FitBit can only be paired with other Fitbit devices unlike the Withings device which can be pared to an iOS or Anddroid device.  The Fitbit scale allows you to track and monitor your progress through their website whereas the Withings has a downloadable app so it is more mobile friendly.

Recommendation

At first look both scales appear to be the same with just a $20 price difference.  After a closer look it is easy to see that while the quality of each is about equal it all depends on how you plan to use it.  If you have or plan to get a Fitbit fitness tracking watch and don’t care about keeping track of your fitness goals on your smartphone or tablet, the Fitbit is a better choice for the money.

If you wish to track your progress closer, share it with others, and monitor your heart rate the WS-50 would be a much better value.  The WS-50 offers more features and allows you to do and track more.  The device continuously monitors the environment by tracking the indoor air quality.  The Health Mate app tracks your body weight, fat, and BMI over days, weeks, and months.  The app also acts as a fitness tracker itself by monitoring the amount of steps you take, the amount of time you spend sleeping, your environment’s temperature, etc.  The app is well designed to help you accurately monitor your health which makes the WS-50 a better choice with in-depth features.
